Dignity Through Design
Dignity Through Design
Eleven11 Interiors Joins Make It Home Bay Area and Eden Housing to Furnish 40 Homes for Formerly Unhoused Residents
At Eleven11 Interiors, we believe that great design doesn’t just elevate spaces—it has the power to transform lives. That’s why I was honored to participate in a recent community-driven initiative led by Make It Home Bay Area in partnership with Eden Housing to furnish 40 permanent housing units for chronically unhoused residents in San Rafael.
Set to open this fall, the newly converted residences on Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael, California, are part of a growing movement to reimagine office buildings as homes—an effort supported by #ProjectHomekey and #DesignForAll. These adaptive reuse projects are changing the landscape of sustainable, affordable housing in California, and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this one.
Turning Empty Spaces into Meaningful Homes
Make It Home Bay Area, a nonprofit devoted to providing home furnishings to those transitioning out of homelessness, is outfitting each of the 40 units with donated, repurposed furniture. The idea is simple but powerful: turning "trash" into treasure by giving high-quality items new life. Each unit will be furnished with beds, dining tables, chairs, seating, lighting, artwork, and accessories—everything needed to not only live but feel at home.
Their mission resonates deeply with the values of Eleven11 Interiors. It’s not just about furniture—it’s about dignity, comfort, and a sense of belonging. And for residents who’ve spent years in temporary or unstable situations, that sense of home can be truly life-changing.
A Design Challenge That Matters
When I first heard about the project, I jumped at the chance to be involved. It had all the makings of a designer’s dream: a compelling challenge, the freedom to explore creatively, and clients who truly needed what we could offer. But more than anything, it was an opportunity to use design for good.
Working alongside more than 20 other Bay Area designers, we each took on units to thoughtfully design and furnish. The goal wasn’t just to make them beautiful—it was to make them feel safe, warm, and lived in. That meant choosing materials that were not only stylish and sustainable but also practical and comforting.
Collaboration, Creativity, and Care
The partnership between Make It Home Bay Area and Eden Housing has been incredibly inspiring. Eden Housing will provide permanent supportive housing along with wraparound services like employment support, healthcare access, and wellness programs. This is more than housing—it’s a new beginning for 40 individuals who’ve faced incredible challenges.
As designers, we often talk about creating spaces that reflect who someone is. In this case, it was about creating spaces that honor where someone is going—a space filled with hope, pride, and possibility.
“Collaborating with Make It Home and Eden Housing was an inspiring experience, rooted in community, creativity, and care. It was a privilege to be involved.” — Trish Striglos, Eleven11 Interiors
